Favorites, collections and other names

The library gives you four ways to narrow a long list of hosts: favorites, recent hosts, collections and other names. This page explains each one and which of them travel to your other devices.

Mark a host as a favorite#

Do one of these:

  • Right-click the host, or touch and hold it (pinch and hold on Vision Pro), and choose Add Favorite.
  • Select the host and choose Add Favorite in its details.

A yellow star appears beside the host's name, and the host is listed under Favorites. Favorites are ordered with the most recently connected first. To undo, choose Remove Favorite in the same places.

Favorites travel to your other devices: marking a host on your Mac marks it on your Vision Pro, and removing it removes it everywhere. The host for the device itself, such as This Mac, is the exception, because every device has its own.

Add a service, project, workgroup or folder to Favorites#

Favorites can also hold the things you open most, each in its own section under the hosts: Services, Projects, Workgroups and Folders.

  • A service: select its host, then right-click the service in Services, or touch and hold it (pinch and hold on Vision Pro), and choose Add Favorite. Choosing it in Favorites connects to that service.
  • A project: in Projects, right-click the project or touch and hold it, and choose Add Favorite. Choosing it opens the project.
  • A workgroup: in Workgroups, right-click a saved workgroup or touch and hold it, and choose Add Favorite. Choosing it opens its terminals.
  • A folder on a machine: in Files, go to the folder and choose the star (Add This Folder to Favorites) in the toolbar. Choosing it opens Files at that folder. Its menu also has Open as Project.

A click or tap on one of these opens it straight away. To take one out, right-click it in Favorites (or touch and hold it) and choose Remove Favorite, or choose the same command where you added it. These favorites travel to your other devices too. One whose service, project or workgroup is not on a device, or has not arrived yet, is not listed there, and appears once it does.

Find hosts you used recently#

Recent lists up to ten hosts, most recently connected first. A host appears there only after a session on it actually connects. Unlike favorites, Recent is kept on each device.

Put hosts in collections#

A collection is a label you give to hosts, such as staging or client-a. A host can be in several collections.

  1. Edit the host: select it and choose Edit.
  2. Open Also known as & Collections.
  3. Click or tap the Collections field, where it says Add a collection….
  4. Type a name and press Return or type a comma. The name becomes a chip. Existing collection names are suggested as you type; choose one to add it.
  5. Choose Save.

To take a host out of a collection, choose the × on its chip, or press Delete in the empty field to remove the last chip.

Each collection appears under Collections.

  • On Vision Pro: choose the Collections tab, then choose a collection from the list. Back (‹) returns to the list of collections.
  • On Mac, iPad and iPhone: choose the collection in the sidebar's Collections section, where each shows the number of hosts in it. The section appears once any host belongs to a collection.

Collection names ignore case and accents, so Staging and staging are one collection, and so are Café and cafe. A collection disappears when no host belongs to it. Collections are saved with the host, so they appear on all your devices.

Give a host other names#

Also known as holds other names for the same machine, such as a short name or a former hostname.

  1. Edit the host and open Also known as & Collections.
  2. In Also known as, where it says Add a name…, type a name and press Return or type a comma.
  3. Choose Save.

Other names are shown in the host's details and are matched by search. They also tell the library which records describe the same machine: hosts that share a name in Also known as, or whose address matches it, are shown as one host.

A host can have up to 64 other names and 64 collections.
